How 3D Technologies Help Preserve Cultural Heritage

Scanology Solutions

As we all know, the work of preserving and studying cultural relics always focuses on the past and history, however, its ultimate purpose must serve the present and contemporary needs. In this era of rapid digital development, advanced technology is quietly changing how we safeguard and pass down our cultural heritage. 3D digitalization, among these techonologies, is making a great contribution.

The Importance of Cultural Heritage Preservation

Cultural relics carry the essence of splendid civilizations, inherit historical culture, and maintain national spirit. They are the precious heritage left to us by our ancestors. These relics and cultural heritage hold the genes and bloodline of the a nation, engraved with its civilization code and historical memory. When these relics are damaged or lost, we lose our invaluable knowledge and cultural heritage, and that’s the reason why preserving these treasures is essential, not just for historical memory but for cultural continuity.

The Role of 3D Scanning Technology in Preserving Culture

3D scanning allows for capturing details of artifacts, with high precision, including their shapes, patterns and colors. By using non-contact 3D scanning technology, the risk of causing harm to these precious relics is minimized. The resulting 3D models are not only helpful to research purposes, also serve as valuable educational resources. They enable people worldwide to explore and appreciate heritage through VR/ AR offering access to these treasures from anywhere in the world. Moreover, 3D scanning plays a vital role in preserving culture by providing experts with valuable insights, into the cultural heritage’s condition and guiding precise restoration processes based on scientific principles.

1. Artifact Restoration

During the restoration of artifacts, utilizing 3D scanning technology offers measurements that assist restoration experts in gaining an understanding of the original structure and extent of damage, to the artifacts. The measured 3D data plays a role in developing restoration strategies.

For instance, SCANOLOGY helped preserve and enhance fence panels of a historic site with its KSCAN-Magic portable 3D laser scanner KSCAN-Magic portable 3D laser scanner. Through high-precison scanning, they meticulously recorded the features of the panel supplying crucial informationfor the restoration efforts. This process significantly preserved the original appearance of the artifact.

2. Creating Replication

3D scanning technology not only plays a vital role in restoration but also provides a scientific basis for artifact replication. By using high-precision 3D scanning equipment, experts can create accurate digital models of artifacts,, and then they can be used with 3D printers to produce exact duplicates to the originals. This process is essential for preserving valuable cultural heritage, especially when the original is too fragile or at risk of damage. The replicas can be used for display and education, while the original is kept safe.

In the project involving the Sainte Anne d’Auray sculpture, SCANOLOGY’sTrackScan-Sharp optical 3D measurement system and iReal M3 3D color scanner played a pivotal role. With a precision of up to 0.025 mm, TrackScan-Sharp accurately reproduced delicate features without physical contact, preserving the artifact’s integrity. TrackScan’s blue laser adapted seamlessly to various surfaces and sizes, handling everything from the grand arch to tiny ornaments under 2mm. Furthermore, the iReal M3, combined with advanced 3D mapping software, enabled the capture of true-color and detailed textures across diverse materials.

3D scanning solutions enable faithful replication and protection of cultural artifacts, ensuring that these invaluable pieces of history remain accessible for study, education, and appreciation for generations to come.

3. Digital Documentation

Digital documentation is essential in cultural heritage preservation, allowing museums and institutions to create detailed archives of artifacts, capturing their dimensions, textures, and colors. These digital records serve not only for cataloging and study but also as a secure backup against potential damage to originals. They allow future generations access to precise, permanent representations and provide remote access for global research collaboration.

SCANOLOGY has been instrumental in this field. In collaboration with Alibaba’s “GIFTS FROM COUNTIES” program, SCANOLOGY used its KSCAN-Magic portable scanner and 3DeVOK Mapping Software to document Yi lacquerware, creating detailed 3D models of traditional items such as pagoda boxes and wine pots.

Case Studies from Partners of UnionTech

Xifeng Buddhist Statues

UnionTech’s 3D printing technology empowers sculptors in the Xifeng Buddhist statue industry, enabling a secondary sublimation of their artistry. Zhiliang Huang, the general manager of Xifeng Buddha Art Statues, has acquired six sets of 3D printers from UnionTech, complemented by their tailored 3D printing digital solution for the sculpture industry. This combination has yielded exceptional results in Buddha statue production. Huang Zhiliang candidly describes it as an organic fusion of technology, religion, and art.

3D printing technology has successfully addressed creators’ concerns regarding raw materials, time constraints, and physical exertion. It liberates their hands, enabling the realization of ideas and creativity. Additionally, Unionfab ONE, an application in the 3D printing field, facilitates one-click efficiency improvements and high-speed collaboration, gaining substantial recognition from numerous printing service companies and customers across various industries.
