The paper examines the principles and methods of 3D scanning, its advantages and possible applications in the design stage, production and quality control. A number of examples from practice in real industrial applications are given. The experience of the company Great Master ltd is shared in the area of 3D scanning and 3D printing. On that basis, some examples and discussions regarding need and opportunities for education of future engineers are given. Linking 3D scanning and 3D printing is also discussed in the field of high education in various specific subjects.
